Spatial language and mental transformation in preschoolers: Does relational reasoning matter?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract There is a consensus that spatial language supports reasoning. However, it remains question of how specific terms (e.g., prepositions) relate to distinct skills are critical for cognition mental transformation). We asked whether 1) preschoolers’ skills, particularly knowledge postpositions, were linked their transformation abilities, and 2) other cognitive factors such as reasoning about relations associated with this link. Turkish-speaking preschool-aged children (Mage = 53 months) completed (i.e., postposition comprehension production), transformation), relational reasoning, inhibition, general vocabulary tasks. Results showed older performed better on all tasks, except the one. Children's performance was performance, beyond inhibition. These findings present evidence link between from Turkish-learning emphasize role transformation.

Visual and Spatial Representations in Relational Reasoning

Psychologists have argued that visual imagery plays a vital role in human reasoning. If so, then reasoning with materials that are easy to visualize should be better than reasoning with materials that are hard to visualize. The literature, however, reports inconsistent results. Our starting point was that the inconsistencies arise from confounding imageability with the spatial nature of the mat...

Spatial Reasoning and Mental Models

Searching for alternative solutions of an indeterminate reasoning task is an important and necessary step in order to draw certain inferences as in the case of deduction. To elucidate the underlying mental representations and processes of the search for alternatives in spatial reasoning, an experiment was conducted that used specific material stemming from AI research of Qualitative Spatial Rea...

Mental Models in Spatial Reasoning

This chapter gives an overview of our ongoing experimental research in the MeMoSpace project, concerning the cognitive processes underlying human spatial reasoning. Our theoretical background is mental model theory, which conceives reasoning as a process in which mental models of the given information are constructed and inspected to solve a reasoning task. We first report some findings of our ...

Mapping relational structure in spatial reasoning

Three experiments investigated whether the similarity of relational structures influences the interpretation of spatial representations. Adults were shown diagrams of hand gestures paired with simple statements and asked to judge the meaning of new gestures. In Experiment 1 the gestures were paired with active declarative statements. In Experiment 2, the gestures were paired with conjunctive an...
